Dr. Lu Yan adheres to the concept of "smart patients". He has published several clinical case reports in peer-reviewed international journals and is interested in seeking out the latest treatments and clinical research opportunities for patients. He attaches great importance to the symptoms and quality of life of patients. Dr. Lu Yan is good at using Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture as modern anti-tumor medical treatment to "enhance efficacy" and "reduce toxicity". Currently, he is the youth member of the Traditional Medicine Committee of Shanghai Anti-Cancer Association.
During his studies, Dr. Lu Yan was impressed by the Japanese master of Chinese traditional medicine, Asada Sohoba. The Collection of Asada Sohoba's Medical Cases (People's Medical Publishing House) edited by Dr. Lu was the academic masterpiece of Asada Sohoba translated to the Chinese language. Differing from the conventions of traditional Chinese medicine doctors, Dr. Lu Yan adheres to evidence-based medicine and advocates for the establishment of a traditional Chinese medicine academic system. He founded and operated the public platform of Evidence-Based Information on Traditional Chinese Medicine. The Manual of Huang Huang Traditional Chinese Medicine, co-authored by Dr. Lu Yan, was the monograph to introduce traditional Chinese medicine systematically with empirical evidence and research data. The manual’s publication greatly influenced the academic circles. He promotes the concept and practice of evidence-based therapeutics through teaching the course Evidence-Based Therapeutics at the California University of Chinese Medicine.
