On July 5-6, 2024, Jiahui International Hospital partnered with Dr. Lu Jiuzhou from Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University to host an academic seminar on elbow arthroscopy and live surgical demonstrations, delving into elbow treatment, pain management, and accelerated rehabilitation. Nearly 50 elbow arthroscopy professionals and enthusiasts attended, with Jiahui Medical Research and Education Group (J-Med) and Haoyishu both streaming the event online.
To address the rapid development of elbow surgery and meet patients' demand for high-quality functional recovery, Shanghai Jiahui International Hospital announced the establishment of an Elbow Joint Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center. Attendees included Jiang Jianyuan, President of the Shanghai Medical Association Orthopedic Division; Lu Jiuzhou; Dr. Allen WU, Chief of Orthopedics and Sports Health Medicine at Jiahui International Hospital; and Dr. Danny DONG, Deputy Chief of the Center.
The Department of Orthorpedic and Sports Medicine at Jiahui International Hospital is one of its clinical excellence centers, featuring subspecialties like joint surgery, spine surgery, and sports medicine, as well as specialized clinics for hands, foot/ankle, and elbow/wrist. Over the past year, the hospital and Dr. Lu Jiuzhou’s team have performed over 100 elbow surgeries, 90% of which were complex revisions. Many patients had undergone multiple surgeries and painful rehabilitation before finding relief at Jiahui.
As elbow arthroscopy cases grow, Dr. Lu Jiuzhou’s team has refined their techniques and rehabilitation protocols, benefiting more patients. Dr. Lu credits his mentors—Dr. Xu Jianguang of Huashan Hospital and American elbow specialist Dr. O’Driscoll—for their support. Future collaborations with Jiahui’s orthopedic team will continue to expand patient access.
The Department of Orthorpedic and Sports Medicine adopts the MSK (Musculoskeletal) model, offering integrated care from prevention to rehabilitation. "We treat patients, not just diseases," said Dr. Allen WU, reflecting Jiahui’s patient-centered philosophy.
Listening Comes First in Patient-Centered Care
At Jiahui International Hospital, doctors spend an average of 30 minutes per patient, with ample time for listening. Dr. Allen WU once treated a South African motorcycle enthusiast with recurrent ACL injuries. Instead of advising against sports, Dr. Allen WU tailored a stronger tendon repair, enabling the patient to return to racing in 8 weeks.
The center also trains doctors and therapists in sports-specific rehab (e.g., soccer, tennis, skiing) to better serve athletes. "Our goal is to help patients return to what they love," said Dr. Danny DONG.
Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) for One-Stop Care
Most patients are 30-50-year-old professionals with limited time. Jiahui’s MDT (multidisciplinary team) approach streamlines consultations, diagnostics, and treatment within a single visit. Pre-visit coordination, same-day diagnostics, and minimally invasive surgeries (1-3-day stays) enhance efficiency.
MDT (Multidisciplinary teams) at Jiahui extends to cross-departmental case reviews, remote consults, rapid referrals, and post-op rehab. "Every department—oncology, OB/GYN, surgery, and internal medicine—is part of this ecosystem," said Dr. Allen WU.
The center boasts global orthopedic experts, advanced imaging, operating rooms, and rehab facilities, offering services from sports injury management to chronic pain relief. Future plans include expanding "comprehensive orthopedic clinics + specialized surgical teams + integrated support" to advance the field.
