On March 6, 2026, Jiahui International Hospital launched the 2026 Spring Jiahui Health x NYU Shanghai Medical Mentorship Program, a pilot partnership guiding a multinational cohort of NYU Shanghai pre‑health students from countries including China, the U.S., Kazakhstan, and the Philippines. The mentorship program, supported by the Shanghai Nature and Health Foundation, connects students to Jiahui’s clinical resources and physician mentors, providing volunteer service, immersive clinical practice, and academic support to build professional skills and prepare them for medical careers.

Representatives at the Unveiling Ceremony included:

    • Dr. John Hsiang, Chairman of the Jiahui Health Executive Committee

    • Ms. Guan Hongyan, Corporate Leader of Jiahui Health

    • Professor Bei Wu, Provost of NYU Shanghai

    • Professor Steven Iams, Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs at NYU Shanghai

Leveraging Jiahui Health's international medical resources and NYU Shanghai's academic platform, the project's first phase will focus on four departments: family medicine, pediatrics, surgery, and dentistry.  A mentor team comprising of Dr. Zheng Chen (Family Medicine), Dr. Joan Zhong (Family Medicine), Dr. Ye Shasha (Family Medicine), Dr. Ahmed Arafat (Pediatrics), Dr. Louis Pan (General Surgery), and Dr. Dasom Choi (Dentistry) will guide students through diverse learning experiences, including volunteer service, lectures, and real-world clinical scenarios, leading them in case discussions and clinical skills training.

Addressing the incoming cohort of mentees, Dr. John Hsiang and Dr. Ling Qiu delivered opening remarks sharing their personal stories of being pre-medical and medical students while emphasizing the human qualities of communication and compassion.

Dr. John Hsiang said to the students, “Being a responsible doctor, other than clinically sound, you must also be good at communicating with patients, you have to be compassionate, and you always put your patients’ interest above your personal interest."

Professor Bei Wu expressed gratitude to Jiahui Health and the Shanghai Nature & Health Foundation for their partnership in launching the Medical Mentorship Program, and emphasized the value of hands-on learning in the medical field. She said she hopes the program will help students cultivate both “the scientific curiosity and the humanistic perspective that great physicians require,” and urged students to approach the experience with “equal measures of curiosity and humility.”

Dr. Ling Qiu said, “NYU Shanghai and Jiahui share the vision for global medical education, and a commitment to nurturing the next generation of doctors. We will work closely to make it happen, and we are also very proud to bring in some international perspectives to China’s medical education together. This work will benefit our community for sure, and it will also make relationship between NYU Shanghai and Jiahui stronger and healthier.”

Student representative from NYU Shanghai, Victoria Wei Shen, addressed the group on behalf of the student cohort, “We're here because we're curious about what medicine really looks like day to day and eager to learn from the physicians who show us how to be the kind of caregivers we hope to become.”

A special Q&A session with the physician mentors was held, where Dr. John Hsiang, Dr. Ling Qiu, Dr. Louis Pan, and Dr. Ahmed Arafat engaged in dialogue on topics such as medical learning, career planning, and clinical skills.

The unveiling concluded with mutual commitments to preparing the next generation to learn, to care, and to lead. As a pilot, the first cohort will complete volunteer service and departmental rotations over the next three months; with mentorship, clinical immersion, and academic support in place, the program will evaluate outcomes and scale successful practices this year. Jiahui Health and NYU Shanghai will use the pilot mentorship program to further deepen exchanges and explore possibilities for medical training and talent development.
