Prof. Dr. Ricardo Bastos, is an internationally trained orthopaedic surgeon with more than 20 years of clinical, academic, and research experience, dedicated to delivering advanced, evidence-based, and patient-centered care in knee surgery.
Dr. Ricardo graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, where he also completed his residency in Orthopaedics and Traumatology. He later earned a Master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Medical Sciences through an international academic pathway involving Universidade Federal Fluminense, in Brazil, and Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, in France.
His international training includes specialized programs in Switzerland, the United States, Brazil, France and United Kingdom, with experience at renowned centers such as the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, US, Instituto Cohen in São Paulo, Brazil, and advanced knee surgery fellowships in Lyon at Croix.Rousse Hospital, France. He recently completed an Executive MBA, at Porto Business School in Portugal and Kozminski University in Poland, reflecting his commitment to healthcare leadership, innovation, and continuous professional development.
Throughout his career, Dr. Ricardo has combined clinical excellence with academic leadership and scientific research. He served as Associate Professor of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at Universidade Federal Fluminense and has worked for eight years at Clínica Espregueira – FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence, in Porto, one of Europe’s leading sports medicine and orthopaedic centers. During this period, he treated high-performance athletes and active individuals with complex knee injuries, helping them recover function and safely return to their sporting activities.
Dr. Ricardo also gained important international research experience at Imperial College London, in the United Kingdom, where he worked as a researcher in the Department of Biomechanics. There, he contributed to the development of pioneering surgical techniques for knee ligament reconstruction, reinforcing his expertise in advanced knee biomechanics, reconstructive surgery, and innovation in orthopaedic treatment.
In Portugal, he has practiced in leading healthcare institutions, including Lusíadas Santa Maria da Feira Hospital and Trofa Penafiel Hospital as well as Clínica Espregueira - FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence providing specialized care for patients with knee injuries, degenerative conditions, sports-related disorders, and complex reconstructive needs. His practice is guided by excellence, safety, individualized treatment planning, and a strong focus on functional recovery.

Dr. Ricardo is widely recognized for his contributions to orthopaedic research and education. He has authored and co-authored more than 30 scientific publications in internationally recognized journals and has contributed to ESSKA consensus papers that help shape contemporary global practice in knee surgery and orthobiologics. He is an active member of leading orthopaedic societies, including ESSKA, ISAKOS, AAOS, SBOT, the Brazilian Society of Knee Surgery, and the ESSKA Orthobiologic Initiative Group — ORBIT.
A frequent speaker at international congresses and an instructor in AO Trauma courses, Dr. Ricardo remains actively engaged in education, innovation, and the advancement of knee surgery. His work bridges clinical expertise, academic research, elite sports medicine, biomechanics, and modern regenerative strategies, allowing him to offer patients treatments aligned with the latest scientific evidence.
