A patient recently came to Jiahui International Hospital's family medicine department with bleeding gums, muscle aches, and stomach discomfort.

During the physical examination, the family medicine doctor noticed scattered petechiae (tiny spots of bleeding under the skin) on the patient's chest. Drawing on extensive clinical experience, the doctor immediately recognized the severity of the condition and ordered blood tests. The test showed many immature white blood cells (called blast cells) in the blood, which may indicate leukemia.

The laboratory's critical value alert system simultaneously notified both the family medicine doctor and the hematologist, triggering the referral protocol. The family medicine doctor contacted the Jiahui hematology team immediately to discuss the patient's condition and swiftly transferred the patient to the hematology department for further diagnosis and treatment.

After an evaluation during a consult, the hematologist diagnosed the patient with acute leukemia. Given the patient’s rapidly rising white blood cell count, critically low platelet count on arrival, and fast disease progression, they were at very high risk of infection, severe bleeding, and organ failure. The patient was therefore admitted immediately. Upon admission, the medical team quickly arranged for a bone marrow aspiration and biopsy. Thanks to the efficient in-hospital collaboration, the bone marrow aspiration results were returned within one day, saving valuable time in developing a precise and timely treatment plan. The patient is currently receiving treatment in the hematology department.

This patient progressed from a general consultation to hospital admission with a strong suspicion of acute leukemia within just two hours, and within 24 hours, the bone marrow examination confirmed the subtype, allowing treatment to begin.

What You Need to Know from Jiahui’s Hematology Department

If you notice warning signs like persistent anemia, repeated infections, unexplained bleeding, or easy bruising, a bone marrow aspiration is an essential test to quickly identify blood disorders. Prompt diagnosis directly affects how effective treatment will be and your long‑term prognosis.

Why You Shouldn’t Delay a Bone Marrow Aspiration

    1. Rapid Disease Progression

Blood disorders such as acute leukemia can worsen rapidly within days or weeks. Timely bone marrow aspiration is the first step to securing a patient's survival.

    2. Narrow Treatment Window

Especially for malignant blood cancers, earlier diagnosis allows treatment to begin sooner and improves remission rates.

    3. Increased Diagnostic Difficulty Due to Complex Conditions

If exams are delayed until severe infection, massive bleeding, or multiple blood transfusions occur, the bone marrow environment becomes more complex and diagnostic accuracy can be significantly reduced.

Jiahui Hematology offers a Expedited Bone Marrow Aspiration service to help you get timely treatment and protect your life.
